What are Containers?

Containers are a lightweight software package that contain an application and the dependencies the application needs to run. They abstract the underlying infrastructure from the application running inside the container while using an open-standard format so they’re portable, and run consistently, anywhere. They can make deploying even the most complex applications a breeze.

Why Containerize Banner?

Planning for and ultimately deploying upgrades in production often requires a significant effort; much of which happens after hours or on weekends.

When you move to containerize Banner, you will immediately benefit from the following outcomes:

  • Reduce your maintenance windows from days to seconds.
  • Quick and easy rollbacks in case of failures.
  • Drastically reduce manual touch points.
  • Automate configuration management between environments.
  • Enhance visibility and audit trail of what versions are deployed.
  • Keep Banner online all the time by using native load balancing and high availability policies.
  • Eliminate vendor lock-in through a portable, open-standard container format.

Some have set-off on a course to modernize by adopting a DevOps methodology. Not without its challenges, DevOps provides processes and policies wrapped in cultural change directed at development and operations teams.

A critical component of this methodology is the use of Containers where applications are built, housed, enhanced, accelerated, tested and launched iteratively and at high velocity.

Great! But what about the current legacy environment?

Home-grown applications, unsupported operating systems, ancient hardware, multiple data centers, private clouds, public clouds make up the IT footprint and developing a strategy to modernize this seems daunting. But it doesn’t need to be.

Containerizing applications solves many legacy IT challenges and there’s no need to adopt a holistic DevOps strategy to reap the benefits.
